Tin Can Bay is a small coastal town situated in the Wide Bay-Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. The town has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was originally inhabited by the Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal people.

European Settlement

The first European settler to arrive in Tin Can Bay was Captain James Fraser in 1837. He named the area after the local Aboriginal word "tinchena" which meant dugong. At the time, Tin Can Bay was a remote outpost and was primarily used as a base for fishing and timber harvesting.

By the late 1800s, Tin Can Bay had become a popular location for timber milling due to the abundance of tall forests nearby. The town also became known for its commercial fishing industry, with fishing fleets regularly heading out to sea to catch prawns, crabs, and oysters.

World War II

During World War II, Tin Can Bay played an important role as a training ground for Australian and American troops. The town was home to a large military base and training facility, and many soldiers spent time in the town before being sent to fight overseas.

Post-War Growth

After the war, Tin Can Bay experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town's commercial fishing industry continued to thrive, and many new businesses and industries were established in the area.
